Pepeekeo burglary suspect arrested

A 21-year-old man is in police custody after a concerned citizen reported a burglary at a neighbor’s house in Pepeekeo.

In response to a 10:30 a.m. call Thursday, police learned that a man had walked onto a property on Maukaloa Street. When the neighbor went to the property to confront the suspect, he was inside the house, according to police. He reportedly threw a case out a window and then climbed out the window and fled on foot, leaving the case behind.

Hawaii Island police recovered the case, which contained a rifle belonging to the victims. They also recovered a backpack inside the house packed with jewelry belonging to the victims.

Investigation led to the arrest of Scott Taira, of Pepeekeo, at 11:51 a.m. Thursday.

He was taken to the Hilo police cellblock while detectives from the Area I Criminal Investigations Section continued the investigation.

At 1:30 p.m. Friday, detectives charged Taira with first-degree burglary and first-degree theft. His bail was set at $10,000. He remains at the cellblock pending his initial court appearance scheduled for Monday.
